Quintet of the Americas Mannahatta Environmental Concert on May 26 at =

Salvation Army Temple in Jackson Heights, Queens

New York, NY =96 Quintet of the Americas woodwind ensemble will present =

Mannahatta, a concert on Wednesday, May 26 =96 7:30 PM at the Salvation =

Army Temple, 86-07 35th Avenue in Jackson Heights, Queens. This event is =

part of the Quintet=92s Mannahatta concert series, presenting =

environmentally-themed music throughout the five boroughs of New York City.

Repertoire for this concert includes Mannahatta Windows by Robert Deemer =

and Hudson River Quintet by Brooklyn-based Christopher Kaufman for =

woodwind quintet with surround-sound audio tape and video of the Hudson =

River and environmental paintings. Ellis Island by Stuart Balcomb and =

Quiet Tide by Mark Dancigers will also be presented, along with other =

nature-inspired works - Duke Ellington=92s Azalea, Queens resident James =

Cohn=92s Strutting Butterflies and Colombian composer Jorge Olaya Munoz=92 =

El Picaflor. Special guest will be environmental artist Ken Cro-ken.

The Mannahatta Project is reconstructing the ecology of Manhattan when =

Henry Hudson first sailed by in 1609 and comparing it to what we know of =

the island today, discovering the environmental foundation of the city. =

Members of Quintet of the Americas are Sato Moughalian, flute, Matt =

Sullivan, oboe, Nicholas Gallas, clarinet, Barbara Oldham, horn and =

Maureen Strenge, bassoon. Founded in Bogota, Colombia in 1976, the =

Quintet has specialized in bringing music new music from the Western =

hemisphere to audiences in the United States since its arrival in New =

York in 1979. The group has enjoyed an international career that has =

taken them to concert halls throughout the Americas, the Caribbean, and =

Eastern Europe. They are currently in residence in The Department of =

Music and Performing Arts in The Steinhardt School at New York =
