>Does anyone still make a D?

Absolutely. At one point I owned two Buffet D clarinets. I sold my
older one when I got a more recent Buffet RC Prestige.
I play the D quite often (imagine the opening of Daphnis in no sharps
or flats, rather than 6 sharps, as it is for Eb clarinet).
In Europe it seems more common for Eb players to own a D clarinet. One
European orchestral Eb player told me, "Over here if you play Eb in an
big orchestra, you will own a D clarinet as well, like soprano-players
own a Bb and A clarinet".
Till Eulenspiegel' "Eb" part is actually for D clarinet. Half of the
Rite of Spring "Eb" part is on D. The Schoenberg Op.9 Chamber Symphony
"Eb"part is actually a D part with a bit of Eb in the middle. Mahler
parts contain a lot of D clarinet, etc.
The sound of the D clarinet is a lot more mellow than that of the Eb;
as different from the Eb clarinet sound as the Bb clarinet's sound
from that of the the C clarinet.
I hope this does not start a crusade against people who play D parts
on Eb, like the occasional crusades against people who play C parts on
Bb. :)
