Martin,

The Strauss suite is an arrangement of both the bass clarinet and the basset
horns parts, which are to be played on the bass clarinet. Strauss did not
make that arrangement and probably would have been pissed off to lose the
basset horn character. The opera is really for a basset horn with a bass
clarinet double, and not the other way round.

When I performed the suite, I unwound the part and played both instruments,
only to have the conductor get pissed off at me for having violated the
instrumentation of the arrangement (which I think is by Leinsdorf).
