I have the ballet score. Just looking at the first few pages, it
calls for 3 clarinets and 1 bass clarinet. One of the 3 doubles on
"piccolo clarinet." It doesn't explicitly state whether it's a
clarinet in D or in Eb (the instructions to change instruments are not
in the score), and because Stravinsky uses fake key signatures it's
even more unclear--I'd have to try it out at the piano to figure it
out, which I can't do right at the moment. I'd have to go through the
rest of the score to figure out if the bass player also doubles on
soprano--so far in the score the bass player doesn't. What I think I
can say from the score, though, is that the eefer player sits 3rd
chair and the bass player is a separate player from the eefer player.

But suffice it to say that, for practical purposes, the ballet DOES
require 4 players--one needs an eefer (or maybe a "d'fer" if you're
lucky enough to own one) and one needs a bass.
