The numbers listed in the Erick Brand Refacing book for the lay
schedule of the Selmer "S" facing Bb soprano clarinet mouthpiece are:
32, 20, 11, 6 and a tip opening of 109. Anyone who refaces mouthpieces
will know what these numbers mean. All I will say is that the lowered
number sets represent half millimeter distances from the tip rail to
where different thickness feeler gauges come to rest under the eched
reading gauge. The thicknesses of the feeler gauges used are in 1/1000
of an inch and are from thin to thick, .0015, .010, .024, .o34 and on
big saxophone or harmony clarinet mouthpieces, a .050 thickness feeler
gauge. The last number listed above, 109 means a tip opening of 1.09
mm tip opening.

While not an expert at refacing, I do know from experience that very
few "S" faced Selmer mouthpieces ever met the above schedule.

For many years in Utah, where I live and grew up, the Selmer S facing
mouthpiece was highly recommended by the late Dr. Max F. Dalby at Utah
State University as a good choice. While I played on several S facing
Selmers, the only really good one I ever played on was Dr. Dalby's
personal copy of this mouthpiece.

The S facing mouthpiece was considered a medium short, medium tip
opening mouthpiece.

I have an old (about 1975) Selmer S mouthpiece that plays very well.
It is not made anymore, and I cannot find the specs on tip opening and
facing for this mouthpiece.
Does anyone have that information?
Thanks.
