Don't have a exact reference after all these years. I saw the movie when it
1st came out in 1956 and remember Steve Allen being interviewed on a late
night show laughing about faking playing. Piano yes, clarinet no. he was
chosen because he sort of resembled Benny Goodman.

Is that just an opinion, or do you have a reference? Steve Allen was a
genius of the first division, and an incredibly talented musician. It
would not surprise me at all to learn that he actually played those parts.
