I have no doubt Benny Goodman could have done honks and squeaks. Most
really good clarinetists have enough control over their horns to come up with
all sorts of sound effects. We all remember where we shouldn't have put
our mouths on the mouthpiece when we were learning! It would be easier to
have Allen do it for the movie as long as he was a neophyte clarinetist in
real life.

I disagree that he actually played clarinet. He took enough lessons so
that
he would look like he was actually playing in the movie. The early part of
the movie, where "young Benny" is taking clarinet lessons, it's actually
Steve Allen playing the honks and squeaks. Benny Goodman could never have
faked that! Obviously, for the rest of the movie, they dubbed in actual
Benny Goodman solos.

Steve Allen, early Tonight Show Host, played clarinet - he also played the
part of Benny Goodman in that excellent film.
