I disagree that he actually played clarinet. He took enough lessons so that
he would look like he was actually playing in the movie. The early part of
the movie, where "young Benny" is taking clarinet lessons, it's actually
Steve Allen playing the honks and squeaks. Benny Goodman could never have
faked that! Obviously, for the rest of the movie, they dubbed in actual
Benny Goodman solos.
