Hi Tom,
I'll go out on a limb here: If you had the same phenomenon of all 4
instruments, from different makers, logic dictates that the problem
is you and/or your equipment. I could suggest a few ideas:
1. Find out if there is s loose screw(s) on your ligature - assuming
you have that type of ligature. And if it is metal, is there a crack
in it?
2. Check your embouchure. A clarinets are almost always more
resistant than Bbs. And they are prone to extra resistance near the
top of the tube, i.e. the upper joint notes before C and C# (the top
of the tube). Are you correctly compensating in support? If you are,
is your embouchure firm enough to deal with the extra pressure?
Sometimes, what one hears as buzzing is actually air escaping the
embouchure at a unusual places, and at great velocity.
3. Some mouthpieces are buzzy, but the buzz is not as noticeable
because the Bb is such a (relatively) bright instrument. The A is
much more mellow, so a buzzy mouthpiece would stand out more.
4. Could it be the room you used? If it was a store room, there might
be metal that vibrates sympathetically at those pitches. I am sure
we've all experienced that funny moment when the music stand
resonates on one tone. Are you sure the buzz was from the instrument?
Did you get a chance to try them in another room?
5. It could be something as silly as a ring you wear touching the
instrument, which is slightly bigger and heavier, requiring some
people to have a slightly different grip. Just an outside possibility...

hello all,

I have been trying new A clarinets. I have tried 4 (2 of the same
model and 2 different models) and there is a tinny/ringing/buzzy
sound on G, G#, A, and A# in the upper register. I never have any
problems like this on my Bb clarinet. Is this something to do with A
clarinets and I need to adjust something to get rid of that?

Any information will be helpful

Thank-you

Tom
