Subj: [kl] update on Baldwin commission project: clar/bsn/horn/piano
Date: Thu, 15 Apr 2010 02:47:27 -0400

Dear Colleagues,

The Daniel Baldwin clarinet/bassoon/horn/piano commission project is in full
swing. He has described it as follows:

"It is based on the life and work of nineteenth-century American
landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church; the working title of the piece
is "Landscapes". There will be three movements."

"The first is entitled "Of Tomorrow's Promise; West Rock, New Haven, 1849."
This was one of the paintings that launched his career at the dawn of his
great life. The second movement is entitled "Of Pain and Sorrows; Twilight:
Mt. Desert Island, Maine, 1865." This was painted shortly after

the ending of the civil war and just weeks after the death of both of
his children (he lost them both one week apart to diptheria in 1865). As we
all know or can imagine, their is no greater pain than the death of a child.
Finally, the third movement is entitled "Of Quiet Reflection; Mt. Katahdin

from Millinocket Camp, 1895." This is the last painting that has
been released by Church. At the twilight of his life, a painter crippled
with arthritis, he paints a portrait of a scene he had painted already
before, surely reflecting both on his wonderous life and the legacy he would
be leaving behind in his works."

Daniel expects to have the project done in June. I have a

number of individuals from around the U.S. and Canada signed on. However,
I'm still in need of additional commissioners to meet Daniel's commission
fee and copying costs.

If you or your group are interested, please let me know and I'll add you to
the list. If you aren't interested but still know someone who might be, I'd
certainly appreciate it if you could forward this message to as many players
as possible. Thanks again for reading this! I'll put the details of the
project below.

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to let all of you know of a commissioning project that I am
spearheading with composer Daniel Baldwin. This project will commission
Daniel to write a new work for clarinet, bassoon, horn, and piano.

The work will have 3 movements and be approximately 15 minutes in duration.
The flavor of the work will be in his typical neo-romantic style with long
lyrical lines and beautiful sonorities comparable to the music of Barber,
Vaughan Williams, or Copland.

In the past few years, Daniel has written several major works for double
reeds including the "River of Light for Bassoon and Piano," "Midwest River
Fantasy for Contrabassoon with Bassoon Choir," "Into the Deep for
Contrabassoon and Piano," "Lone Star Trilogy for

Contrabassoon, Horn, Violin, and Marimba," "Neoteric Suite for Bassoon,
Horn, and Cello," "Ballade for Bassoon, Violin, and Piano," "Maverick
Fanfare for Bassoon Quartet," "Legend of the Fawn for 2 Bassoons and Piano,"
"The Rose Chronicles for Oboe, English Horn, and Bassoon," "Of Flowers and
Thorns for Mezzo-Soprano, Bassoon, and Piano," "Ballade for Bassoon
Quartet," "Sonata for Oboe and Piano,"

and the MENC award winning "Song of Praise for English Horn and Piano," as
well as pieces for clarinet and horn including "Western Serenade for Oboe,
Clarinet, and Piano" and "Appalachian Suite for Horn and Piano." These have
been performed many times around the world in countries such as Belgium,
England, Australia, Japan, China, and

Germany.

With this new project, commissioners will have a chance to be part of the
creation of a major new chamber-music work and be recognized in the score
for their contribution.

The fee to join this project is $50 per commissioner.

All participants would be listed on the title page as contributors with
their affiliation; they also will receive a set of parts and score. All
participants would have a one-year exclusivity agreement on performances
before the piece is made available for the general public. Participants may
share the cost of the commission, but for each $50 submitted, only one score
and set of parts will be sent

out. Be sure to let me know if you are sharing.

Once we get a number of people signed up, Daniel would anticipate completing
the quartet by June 15.

You may send the $50 fee now or wait until the piece is completed (payment
in advance is preferred, but not a stipulation). Either way, please contact
either myself or Daniel to reserve a copy of this new work. Payment can be
made by check or money order and should be sent

directly to Daniel at the following address:
