This posting made my day, my week, and my month. It was delightful as well =

as being an important discovery of old basset horns.

Subject: [kl] more historical clarinets found in kandern

Hallo List,
Sorry, I went into "sleep mode" for a few months as far as the clarinet lis=
t =

is concerned. Just getting back now to report an astounding discovery in =

Kandern (sw corner of Germany at the edge of the Black Forest).
I told the list last year about the basset horn festival in May 2009. We =

played four concerts with brief presentations of those historic basset horn=
s =

in each concert. See http://bassetti-paletti.de/BassetHornFestival2009.html =

for more details including some brief MP3 excerpts of the concerts. Those =

historic basset horns sound delicious!
But the actual news now is:
No fewer that four more clarinet-instruments have been discovered in the =

attic of the museum at Kandern! They are:
two five-keyed clarinets from the first half of the 19th century (not so =

rare but both are complete and in excellent condition) and ...
two bass clarinets from around 1860! One has 22 keys and the other has 18 =

keys. They are all complete! Bells, mouthpieces, all the keys etc. One of =

the bass clarinets even has a metal ligature and a reed!
I'll be off-line for the weekend because 15 of my pupils and I are visiting =

the workshop in Bamberg where the basset horns were restored and the museum =

in Nuremberg where the basset horn bells were reconstructed. 6 hours in the =

bus ... uhhhhgg!
More details about this new find are coming. The information is first comin=
g =

out in the 'rohrblatt magazine (planned) and also being sent to Albert Rice =

for documentation. Then I'll put up photos, a report and a listing of all =

Kandern instruments by my friend and colleague Dr.Peter Geisler (from =

Schopfheim, not Berlin). So drool for a while! ;-)
By the way, 2 violins have also been found in the same attic. What will the =

next discovery be?
Greetings from the Black Forest,
David
