In 1988 and 1989 I did summer research at UCSD. 1988 was the best
because I lived in a converted garage 100 meters from the surf in
Solana Beach. Both were glorious summers. During one of those
summers Larry Adler came to play with the San Diego Pops at the
portable band shell near Sea World. The dinner concerts were great
fun because I was a temporary bachelor, having left my wife in
Lakewood to remodel the house in my absence. A good time to be
away! At each of the concerts I sat with a new set of jolly
strangers around one of the dinner tables spread around the grass at
sundown across Mission Bay.

Anyway, Dan allowed me to dredge up memories I thought were long
lost. Larry was an incorrigible self-promoter but certainly as good
as his recordings. Among other things, he played Bolero that night
and claimed that when he played it for Ravel in Paris, the composer
said, "He plays it like I composed it for him!"
Ah, well, purple prose. During the concert Jerry joined him for a
couple of numbers toward the end.

Certainly a nice memory of my stay in San Diego.

Oliver
