Dear Bear,

Next summer I am going to be spending a few days in Tucson, and hope that we
can get together at that time.

The C major flute quartet is in two movements. I have nothing to say about
the first movement, but the second -- the one with the variations that are
similar to but by means identical with K. 361's variations is an arrangement
by an unnamed party that dates from around 1788, which is when it was first
printed.

I have had the opportunity to write about that piece several times. Since
you can get to the music library of UofA, I suggest you get hold of the 2006
Mozart Jahrbuch, and read the article I wrote entitled, "The Variations of
K. 285b," and you will find it on pp. 177-185.

Also, in my most recent book, "gran Partitta," there is an entire chapter
that I devote to the flute quartet. It's not pretty. (Shameless hint!! Buy
the book). And I add that the most recent issue of the Clarinet has a review
of the book by Greg Barrett. He likes the book and I have agreed that he may
marry my beautiful daughter. I also add that my beautiful daughter has a
rich father.

To sum up, Mozart had absolutely nothing to do with the variations movement
of K. 285b. It is an arrangement -- and not a very good one at that -- of
the variations movement of K. 361.

But once a mistake is made in music history, it has a half life of 10,000
years. This means that people will be playing the piece, announced as an
authentic Mozart composition, thinking that they are doing a good thing, for
many years to come.
