Subj: The lists will be migrating to new software/servers soon [kl]

Dear list members,

This year's donation drive hasn't gone as well as in the past, so like
every other company I had to figure a way to squeeze fixed costs without
sacrificing service. That caused me to re-evaluate how and where I was
running the servers that support these lists and a fair number of web sites.

I came to the conclusion that I could significantly down-size the "baby
server farm" located in my home and use some as a backup system, cut the
bandwidth, and host the lists and other web servers at a commercial
entity. This hybrid approach cuts down my monthly fixed costs
significantly and won't materially affect the other things that go on
behind the scenes.

But ... with all this work going on I feel that moving to a better (or
at least better supported) mailing list is the right thing to do. I
should be able to re-subscribe everyone and no archives will be lost.
You should also be able to handle your subscriptions via email or by
visiting a web site. Both regular and digest subscriptions will
continue. The posting address will be forwarded for some time, but a new
domain will be started up to service the lists.

However, as with any massive change, I'm sure there'll be little things
that I haven't thought of - the 'gotchas'. Already there has been one
catastrophe during the DNS migration of websites and a half-catastrophe
- I planned everything to run smoothly, but machinery out of my control
didn't respond as desired and the techies on the other side are stumped.
Things are more or less worked out now, but it's been a rough morning ...

This change isn't happening today, or tomorrow, or this week. Late in
March or early April is the probable date. I'll keep you informed.
