Quintet of the Americas in Concert with Cuarteto Latinoamericano on
March 10 at New York’s Americas Society – Concert Celebrates
Bicentennial of Mexican Independence

New York, NY – The Quintet of the Americas woodwind quintet will be in
concert with Cuarteto Latinoamericano string quartet on Wednesday, March
10 – 7:00 PM at the Americas Society, 680 Park Avenue at 68th Street in
Manhattan. This concert will celebrate the Bicentennial of Mexican
Independence.

A special work has been commissioned for the event from Mexican composer
Mario Lavista. The new work, Gargantúa, is a nonet for the combined
forces of the winds and strings of the two ensembles. Also on the
program, Quintet of the Americas will perform Danza del mediodia by
Arturo Marquez, Juegos nocturnos by Federico Ibarra and another work by
Lavista, Marsias for solo oboe and 8 tuned water glasses which will
feature Quintet oboist Matt Sullivan accompanied by the other Quintet
members playing the tuned water glasses. The Cuarteto will also perform
La Calaca (last dance from Altar de Muertos) by Gabriela Ortiz.

Born in Mexico City, Mario Lavista studied in Mexico with Carlos Chavez
and Rodolfo Halffter, and in Paris with Henri Pousseur, Nadia Boulanger
and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Since 1998, Lavista has been a member of the
prestigious EI Colegio Nacional. He has taught in Mexico and at the
University of Chicago, Cornell, the University of California San Diego,
Indiana University and McGill University. His works are performed
internationally by some of the most distinguished chamber and orchestral
groups of our time.

Cuarteto Latinoamericano, formed in 1982, is known worldwide as the
leading proponent of Latin American music for string quartet. This
award-winning ensemble from Mexico consists of the three Bitrán
brothers, violinists Saúl and Arón and cellist Alvaro, along with
violist Javier Montiel. The Cuarteto has recorded most of the Latin
American repertoire for string quartet, and has been nominated for a
Grammy award in 2002 in the field of Best Chamber Music Recording as
well as for a Latin Grammy. The Cuarteto has performed as soloist with
many orchestras and toured extensively around the world. Visit them at

Members of Quintet of the Americas are Sato Moughalian, flute; Matt
Sullivan, oboe; Nicholas Gallas, clarinet; Barbara Oldham, horn; and
Maureen Strenge, bassoon. Founded in Bogota, Colombia in 1976, the
Quintet has specialized in bringing music from Latin America to
audiences in the United States since its arrival in New York in 1979.
The group has enjoyed an international career that has taken them to
concert halls throughout the Americas, the Caribbean, and Eastern
Europe. They are currently in residence in The Department of Music and
Performing Arts in The Steinhardt School at New York University. Visit
