I think Rubank is a great; however, I'd think you must have a music store
close by that has a reasonably large selection of beginning books that
aren't necessarily band books. If you can't take time to browse what's
available now, you might want to make a stop when you have time to go through the
available books to see what looks interesting. I've frequently purchased a
book or two just to keep a variety around for teaching use. A 10-year-old
probably has small finger pads and perhaps short fingers. Short fingers
are a real impediment to clarinet playing at any age, although persistence
usually pays off. If a Suzuki book exists (and I supposed it does), I'm not
sure that it's as used as Rubank and some of the other [old] standbys out
there.
