My own opinion is that 10 years old is too old for Suzuki. I don't think
there is any genuine Suzuki literature available for anything but string
instruments and piano. IMO it doesn't make much difference what book you use
so long as you use it intelligently. Galper, Sueta, even the beginning
"heterogeneous" band books will do for a start. After you've established the
basics of embouchure, fingering and (if this is a first instrumental
exposure) rhythm and pitch notation, you can move to the method of your
choice. Again, IMO, Rubank is too dry for young students unless you mix in a
good deal of folk-song and other musical material, but that kind of thing is
already self-contained in the newer general method books. Later, Rubank in
conjunction with easier etude books like the Lester series, easy solo pieces
and the student's own school band or orchestra music can work well.

Subject: [kl] method book for 10 year old beginner

I am going to be teaching lessons to a 10 year old beginner. I don't
want to use the same book that I use with my 12 year old band students.
My question is this: Is there a Suzuki clarinet method book available?
Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Deborah
