Hi everyone,

I have the pleasure of playing some of the well-known Polish
composer's clarinet music with him in attendance, and had a session
with him on the Quartet for Clarinet and Strings today. Listening to
various recordings, there are a few potential misprints that some have
attempted to correct. Here is his own verdict on these spots, for
anyone interested:

Movement 1 "Notturno" bar 8 into 9 the Db (as written in the clarinet
part) does repeat across the barline (one recording had it changed to
a Cb in bar 9)

Movement 2 Scherzo: bar 87 has a misprint, the last quarter note
should be an F natural (missing the accidental) so the three notes
drop a semi-tone as the strings do in the bars before

bar 207 the grace-notes are misprints, they should be G#-A as in the
previous 2 measures

Movement 4 "Abschied" bar 46 is a misprint, second 16th should be
changed to a C natural

He's a very serious but humourous guy, he wanted us all to play out
expressively, even in softer dynamics; as he put it, "this should
sound like *music*, not 'new music'"! He had just come from Nashville
where he really liked the orchestra and their new hall.

For anyone in the Toronto area, we play this piece at the University
of Toronto Wednesday night at 7:30, free admission, Walter Hall (lower
recital hall at the Faculty of Music). Thursday night same time and
place I play the Three Miniatures with piano and the solo Prelude. I
went to ask him about something in the Miniatures part and he
apologized and said, "You know, I wrote this over 50 years ago, I'm
not sure!" But I'll see if there are any other note changes to report
after Thursday's dress rehearsal.

Thanks,

Peter Stoll
