Quintet of the Americas Concerts in Bayside, Jackson Heights and
Jamaica, Queens on January 25 and 26

New York, NY – The Quintet of the Americas, in collaboration with the
Latin American Cultural Center of Queens, will give three Queens
concerts of music of the Americas on Monday, January 25 - 10:00 AM at
Catholic Charities Bayside Senior Center, 221-15 Horace Harding
Boulevard in Bayside and on Tuesday, January 26 – 11:00 AM at the
Salvation Army Center of Queens, 86-07 35th Avenue in Jackson Heights
and at 1:00 PM that same day at Community Mediation Services, 89-64
163rd Street in Jamaica.

The programs will include music from Puerto Rico, Colombia, Mexico,
Cuba, Venezuela and tangos from Argentina. Special pieces will also
include Leonard Bernstein's Danzón, the Cuban dance from his ballet
Fancy Free and Jimenez Suite for Wind Quintet by former Queens resident
Charles Griffin, based on poems by the Spanish poet Juan Ramon Jimenez.
Other featured composers will be Paquito D'Rivera, Astor Piazzolla and
Carlos Gardel. Quintet oboist Matt Sullivan will be featured in Marsias,
an unusual piece for solo oboe and tuned water glasses by the
internationally known Mexican composer Mario Lavista.

Special guest will be tango song specialist Chris Vasquez, an actor and
singer based in NYC who specializes in the singing of tangos, especially
the songs of Carlos Gardel, Anibal Triolo and Astor Piazzolla. He has
sung in Colombia and Argentina and in cities in the United States.
Recognized at the NY Argentine Consulate as the "Best Singer" in the New
York International Tango Competition, he was also a finalist at the
Medellin International Tango Festival in Colombia. Visit him at

All three of these concerts are free and open to the public.

Members of Quintet of the Americas are Sato Moughalian, flute; Matt
Sullivan, oboe; Nicholas Gallas, clarinet; Barbara Oldham, horn; and
Maureen Strenge, bassoon. Founded in Bogota, Colombia in 1976, the
Quintet has specialized in bringing music from Latin America to
audiences in the United States since its arrival in New York in 1979.
The group has enjoyed an international career that has taken them to
concert halls throughout the Americas, the Caribbean, and Eastern
Europe. They are currently in residence in The Department of Music and
Performing Arts in The Steinhardt School at New York University. Visit
