Oops! I meant to say "the other three principal winds," although in practice
the 1st horn is often scored as part of a woodwind choir, so four may be
correct after all.

"His sound" may not be the most important thing the orchestra selection
committee looking for. I don't have an opinion about whether or not he's the
NYP's answer, but they should be also considering how well "his sound" and
his general style of play fit with what's already established in the
orchestra and, in particular, the woodwind section. Whether he's "the man
the NY Phil is looking for" or not depends on whether or not his style and
tone concept, however musical and beautiful they are, are a good fit with
the other four principal winds and with the music director's overall concept
of orchestral balance and style. After all, none of the possible candidates
has a bad sound.

Hey folks,

Do all think Burt Hara is the man the NY Phil is looking for? I like his
sound.
