Subj: [kl] NAMM Show (was: Re: [kl] Any New Developments in Bass Clarinets?)

This show is intended for manufactures to make deals with distributors
and dealers. While there are people trying instruments, the big
manufactures (Buffet, Conn/Selmer) generally have samples of what they
sell, not everything. However, Morrie Backun has been in the Conn/Selmer
booth the last few years and he is always friendly.

In the Selmer France booth they alway seem to be deep in conversation
and ignore the people walking around and looking at the instruments. For
the last few years I have wanted to try their low C bass on display but
it has been up on a platform and I am afraid of knocking other
instruments down if I try to reach it without help.

Some of the smaller manufactures like Patricola and Orsi-Weir (I am not
sure that company still exists) have been in small booths and welcome
people who want to talk and try things. I think that is about it when
it comes to professional level clarinets.

Then there are the Chinese importers who generally have samples of what
they make that you can try.

While I haven't been to ClarinetFest since 2003, the manufactures and
retailers that attend usually bring a lot of instruments to try and
there is a lot of selling going on which doesn't happen at NAMM.

I would really like to go to Musikmesse, but I don't think it is going
to be this year.
