I used to use your footballers shield method too, with about the same longevity, before switching to Parafilm. I found
that Parafilm folded several times and trimmed lasts a long time, too; I have had the same two guards in my 35mm film
container (perforated lid) for over a year now. And, you don't need hot water, or much technique, to make a quick
replacement from a strip of the film kept in your clarinet case.

I reckon I have enough left on my roll at home to last me to the next millennium:-)

Another thought....

I've used florist tape (white only...don't know about the dyes in the tape w/color). It's paper tape....impregnated with
wax. Tear off a length, fold over as you like for thickness...place over teeth/braces. It's easy to remove and because
of the paper base....stays in place after it's wet. Like the Parafilm material...a roll lasts a long, long time.
