Fred, when I played the work, I never examined the text with the care and
attention that you have given to the piece. But, at least from a fast
examination of all five parts, I concluded that the two movements were
retrogrades of one another. There may be exceptions here and there, but it
still a dazzling piece of compositional skill to have created two movements
from one composition.

And Hindemith was not alone in doing so. Mozart did it for two violins
looking at the same piece of music paper on opposite sides of a table. Each
one begins in the upper left hand corner as you might expect, except that
being on opposite sides of the table, the upper left hand corner of the
music is either the first or last measure of the piece depending on where
you are standing.
