Note though, that I was not talking about mixing powdered wood with
superglue, that's an interesting technique. I was cautioning against
pressing the crack together and simply gluing opposite sides of the =
crack
(with whatever glue). This was advice from Stephen Fox. For a very thin
crack, superglue could indeed wick into the crack without pressure) and =
make
a seal, though its gap-filling properties are very limited.

Most (I would dare say almsot all) professional repairers would disagree
with what Keith Bowen wrote. Using super glue, with or without wood dust
mixed, and in addition to or without pinning,=A0is very common for =
repairing
cracks. A lot of repairers still pin, but there are more and more =
repairers
who find that super glue without pinning works very good in many cases. =

repairers report cracks haven't opened for over 10 years with super glue
alone. By the way some of those repairers have degrees in engineering, =

One advantage of super glue (the thinnest type, not thick or gel) is =
that it
wicks to the bottom of the crack using maximum surface of the sides of =
the
crack to glue. This is much harder and sometimes impossible with other
glues. Another problem is when using wood dust with the super glue. If
someone is putting the wood dust first, the glue will soak into it and =
won't
glue the crack itself reliably. You first have to make sure the glue =
wicks
to the bottom and only then use wood dust. The type of super glue is
important too, I have tried many types and some=A0are just not as strong =
as
others. For example Yamaha used to recommend pinning and then changed =
and
now recommend gluing.

In the first question it wasn't completely clear if he meant the bell =
itself
or the joint that connects to the bell. It's very uncommon to pin a =
bell.

It should really be repaired professionally (and then you won't see the
join, and it will be as strong as new).

Superglue would be about the worst to use. You should not force the =
crack
closed to glue it (which is what superglue needs) as it will only split
again there or somewhere else. The principle is that you first =
strengthen
the part by pinning, banding or carbon fiber banding, then fill the gaps
with a filler that is usually powdered granadilla mixed with epoxy, then
smoothen and polish the surface to match the wood.

I'm a professional engineer and amateur woodworker and do almost all my =
own
maintenance. But I don't do cracks.
