Most (I would dare say almsot all) professional repairers would disagree wi=
th what Keith Bowen wrote. Using super glue, with or without wood dust mixe=
d, and in addition to or without pinning,=A0is very common for repairing cr=
acks. A lot of repairers still pin, but there are more and more repairers w=
ho find that super glue without pinning works very good in many cases. Some=
repairers report cracks haven't opened for over 10 years with super glue a=
lone. By the way some of those repairers have degrees in engineering, and s=
ome are wood workers too, if anyone cares about those things=A0and=A0not ju=
st experience=A0and logic of the repair itself.=0A=0AOne advantage of super=
glue (the thinnest type, not thick or gel) is that it wicks to the bottom =
of the crack using maximum surface of the sides of the crack to glue. This =
is much harder and sometimes impossible with other glues. Another problem i=
s when using wood dust with the super glue. If someone is putting the wood =
dust first, the glue will soak into it and won't glue the crack itself reli=
ably. You first have to make sure the glue wicks to the bottom and only the=
n use wood dust. The type of super glue is important too, I have tried many=
types and some=A0are just not as strong as others. For example Yamaha used=
to recommend pinning and then changed and now recommend gluing.=0A=0AIn th=
e first question it wasn't completely clear if he meant the bell itself or =
the joint that connects to the bell. It's very uncommon to pin a bell.=0A=

ly be repaired professionally (and then you won't see the=0Ajoin, and it wi=
ll be as strong as new).=0A=0ASuperglue would be about the worst to use. Yo=
u should not force the crack=0Aclosed to glue it (which is what superglue n=
eeds) as it will only split=0Aagain there or somewhere else. The principle =
is that you first strengthen=0Athe part by pinning, banding or carbon fiber=
banding, then fill the gaps=0Awith a filler that is usually powdered grana=
dilla mixed with epoxy, then=0Asmoothen and polish the surface to match the=
wood.=0A=0AI'm a professional engineer and amateur woodworker and do almos=
t all my own=0Amaintenance. But I don't do cracks.=0A=0AKeith Bowen=0A=0A=
