I would also recommend the Hendrickson Method if you can find it,
particularly if you are starting anyone older than elementary school.

Rosheen,

Like so many, I started with Rubank as a young student many years ago. As an
adult returnee and needing to go back to basics for a while, my teacher
relied on Clarence Hendrickson's method books (Books One and Two, published
by Belwin, then Alfred). Book One is similar to Rubank. (I never got to
Rubank II in those long-ago days.)

Hendrickson's Book Two covers major and minor keys up to four sharps and
flats. Each lesson consists of the major/minor scales, thirds and arpeggios
as well as etudes and duets. It's a great book. After that it's on to
Baermann.

Best of Luck,
Chuck Strum

Hi All,

This is my first post to the list, though I have been
reading for a while. Thank you all so much for providing this gold mine
of information!

I am after reccomendations of books to start a
learner on, both for adult learners and children, as I am just
beginning to teach privately. Which ones are your favourites and why?

Thanks for your help and wisdom :)

Rosheen
