Subj: [kl] Copland Clarinet Concerto note question

Dear list,

Here's something else to perk us up.

I've noticed that I'm playing a possibly incorrect note in the
Copland, and I don't really want to change it to what's printed. I'm
interested in your opinions, and I'll share an anecdote involving
Copland, Marcellus, and Goodman after my query.

Measure 426 has a clearly marked A# in the clarinet run, matching the
G# in the violas, but measure 427 has no such # on the A. I don't
see that there would be a clash either way in 427 with the chord in
the orchestra. I've been playing A# in 427 for over 25 years. Not
sure what to do. Opinions?

Here's a story related to me by Robert Marcellus:
On the famous Copland/Goodman recording, Benny Goodman plays a
C-natural in measures 413 and 415, though Cb is in the key
signature. When Marcellus had an opportunity to ask Copland about
this note, he said, very respectfully, "Maestro, you have a Cb in the
score, but Benny plays a C-natural here. Which would you like me to
play?" Copland replied (somewhat dismissively of his own
composition) "C-flat, C-natural: Play what you want!"

So, I'm not sure Copland would care whether I play A-natural or A# in
427, but I'd like to feel confident in my decision.

Thanks,

Sean
