And certainly not northern California. We have at least five orchestras
playing Nutcracker. One is in Oakland, one in San Francisco (6 weeks
including some 2 and 3 a day shows), one in San Jose (two weeks with several
2 a day shows), one only 3 miles from me on the campus of Foothill college
in Cupertino (about 8 or 9 days), and one in Santa Cruz (about 5 days).
There may be others, but I have played that bloody piece in every one of
those locations. The thing about Nutcracker is that it is a dreadful bore
and hard work. And if one is offered the invitation to play it, you are
almost forced to do so. If you don't, then when Mahler 1-9 come around, you
don't get invited. The guys and gals who do the hiring remember those who
helped them out, and Nutcracker is a difficult work to play over and over
and over.

So one takes the job and does the best one can in light of the fact that
multiple repetitions of the same piece are the most difficult things to do
well.
