What the Met orchestra did was make a recording. It matters not it it's
played later on a phonograph or "live" in real time in a place
geographically distant.

Musicians have (rightfully) been paid for making recordings since their
inception. Why should they be stiffed here?

Unfortunately, many musicians have made recordings and gotten little for it
- here in Seattle, the rumor is that the dozens of recordings made by the
Seattle Symphony have netted the musicians a pittance if anything.

Eastern European orchestras have filled the CD bins because they "worked for
free" (i.e., were ripped off).
