Matthew,

I have written a book called "A Composer's Guide to Understanding
Music With Activities for Listeners, Interpreters, and Composers". The
book talks about the elements of music from a composer's viewpoint and
there are recorded examples to illustrate the concepts. Each chapter
has individual activities geared towards listeners, interpreters, and
composers. I recommend that all readers do the listening activities
and the interpreter activities has you applying the ideas using music
you are currently practicing. It should help you develop the skills
you describe in your email. It is available as a download or hard copy
