There is, of course, the other matter, a cultural attitude held over
from the time before Gutenberg invented movable type: "This book
stays HERE, CHAINED TO THE WALL. DON'T DREAM of checking it out."

In obtaining some of the manuscripts I've sequenced for my web page,
I remain very passively persistent. It took me a year after I found
where a manuscript rested for Ponchielli's "Il Convegno" and I got
and received local help in Rome to push the matter along to get a
microfilm of the work. It took me 4 years to track down the
autograph of Bruch's Double Concerto. Fortunately the library which
had it didn't make me sign anything saying that it was for personal
use only. That may have been because the staff lines had practically
disappeared (on the monochrome microfiche anyway) and they figured
that it could never be reconstructed. He! He! He!

I fear that libraries are going to become more sophisticated (and
proprietary) about the works they hold. That is bound to slow down
the democratization of knowledge, starting way back with Aldus
Menutius who invented italic and the pocket book.

Krommer composed 45 partitas of which only 13 survive. I'd love to
get my hands on a 14th in some dusty private European
collection. Keep your eyes peeled for me!
