I really have nothing significant to say about his performance. For one
thing, the YouTube piece contained only a part of the first movement. If
there is more I don't know about it. And one cannot judge a performance by
only a small part of the music.
Mostly I was interested in the unique sound he got with his basset clarinet,
and it would be interesting to know who made it for him.
In effect, I was not overwhelmed by his playing, though I was drawn to both
his choice of articulations but turned off by his somewhat peculiar way of
tonguing..
This weekend I am reviewing a concert at which Anthony McGill will play the
Beethoven Op. 11 and the Brahms trio. Only when I can hear a performer play
an entire work (and this case, two works) can I make any kind of an
intelligent statement.
