Subj: [kl] Manny's -- Dan's Story

Dan's story is typical of Manny's. They were, to say the least,
deficient in the honesty department. In fact, they would rob you
blind. They certainly did me.

In 1962, I was heading off to Interlochen and needed a better Bb than
the Selmer Omega I had been playing. I randomly chose a store on
music row, and it happened to be Manny's. The salesman (named Teddy,
I think) showed me into a basement room and gave me 20 or so R-13s,
from which I chose a good one. I offered the Selmer and a Haynes
(low-C closed hole) flute in trade, and he still wanted more cash,
which I foolishly gave him.

The Dark/Bright story is a nice one, but you need to remember the
underlying dishonesty. Charlie Ponte didn't behave that way, and I
wish I had gone to his store instead. That way, I'd still have the
flute.
