Dear Friends,

One outcome of my winning the 2008 Global Connections grant from Meet the
Composer, is that I became the first musician in history ever to witness,
in detail, the entire process from searching for and harvesting a grenadilla
(African Blackwood) tree, to the making of a top of the line musical
instrument.

I will be presenting two different types of related FREE events upcoming
in October and November. At both types of events I will have two displays.
One is hands on - a display for you to touch, feel, pick up pieces of
grenadilla, see the branches, leaves and pieces of the tree. The other is hands
off - a display of authentic, museum quality Makonde sculptures and
ornamental turned sculptures.

During Buffet Crampon USA Days at various music stores throughout the San
Francisco Bay Area, I will have a slide show running non stop during the
event and will be on hand to answer questions. Buffet oboes and clarinets
will be on hand for you to play and to try. Bring mouthpieces and reeds.

During the "Music Tree" lecture performances, I will present a lecture
with slides and video about the process from harvesting to manufacture, about
what conservation efforts are currently underway, and about my experiences
in both Tanzania and Mozambique. Because of the nature of the venues at
which this particular series of lecture performances are taking place, you
absolutely must let the venues know in advance that you are coming.

Sonic Forest is the name of my new chamber music ensemble - oboe, violin,
harp, with special guest percussionist. Thanks to a grant from American
Composers Forum, we'll play our debut concert and CD release event on October
27. Details also below.

All presentations are free and open to the public. Please let me know if
you are aware of any additional venues that would welcome these
presentations. Thanks.
