Subj: [kl] On Pamela Weston's suicide
Date: Sun, 20 Sep 2009 19:15:37 -0400

I was only informed of Pamela's suicide in Switzerland today. I last saw
her in London at least 20 years ago when she, my wife, and I had a lovely
outdoor dinner together. When it was time for us to go after the dinner,
there was an awkward moment for me, because I wanted to kiss her but was
concerned that such behavior might annoy what I thought was British
standoffishness.

So as I rose to leave, she said to me, "Aren't you going to kiss me goodbye?
Who knows when, if ever, we shall meet again."

I must have hugged her for a full minute and then gave her several
additional kisses all on her cheek.

I loved her books about clarinetists of the past, and I loved her
willingness and energy to work on such a broad subject and for such a long
time.

Requiem in pace, Pamela Weston. I wish I had kissed you much more
frequently.
