One of my favorite combinations to play was the Beethoven Septet, which led
to the Berwald Septet, the Spohr octet and nonet, and of course, the
Schubert octet. Terrific pieces, every one.
So I was surprised to hear a work of a similar instrumentation about which I
knew nothing. Never heard it, never heard of it.
I speak of the Grand Septet by Ferdinand Ries for piano, winds, and strings.
Lovely piece. The instruments were not named and I was listening over the
radio, but it seemed to me that the winds were a clarinet and two horns,
while the strings were a violin, viola, and cello. But that is just my
guess from hearing the work.
Charming piece. Music in the Beethoven style. I understand that Ries
studied with Beethoven.
And of course, that leads to a request for Ries pieces! For those who do
not know about Ries pieces, they were the candies that were used to lure the
space alien out of his seclusion in the movie E.T.
