My gut feel, in looking at the various publishers of the Cavallini capricci,
is that none of them can be thought of as Urtext. Cundy Bettony and Kalmus
both used sources of either uncertain origin or else sources whose
copyrights had expired. Their purpose was more to have a big catalog of
things to buy rather than producing critical editions.

In Kalmus' case, their editions are famous for their many, many errors. But
they made their money during WW2 when copyrights held by enemy countries did
not have to be respected. That is generally true with any two belligerent
nations.

Carl Fischer was never a top-flight publisher and I doubt if Urtext was
particularly valuable for them. They published the Bellison edition of K.
622 and Bellison made many unauthorized changes to that work.

International, in their edition edited by Drucker, represents Drucker's
personal preferences. He, like Bellison, produced editions that represented
how they liked to play the work.

Hoffmeister is the European version of Kalmus. Their print is not very good
and their editions are not authoritative, though some might be.

Finally we come to Ricordi. I think it is safe to say that no Italian
editor of their editions ever agreed with any other Italian editor. Besides,
in many of Ricordi's publications, they held the copyright and were mostly
interested in sales not authority.

Sean, you would do just as well creating an edition to your tastes.
