Hey, fellow practitioners....the debate about a clarinetist is starting again....the last time I saw such a debate on klarinet was when my reed-fighting colleagues started in on the Reginald Kell boxed set!

Giora is a fine clarinetist who has an individual crystalline sound that comes out of his glass mpce. The last time I heard a sound like that, it was played by the late Bob Dransite, who came out of Eastman, and left us at too young an age. He was a good friend to me, back in the day....anybody out there remember him? A car crash took him.

But I digress. Gioria's use of an expanded palette of dynamics sometimes gets in the way of melodic flow. But still, clarinet playing is an art, and I enjoy listening to those who have managed to derive an individual sound out of the black cylinder! I also enjoy hearing individual interpretations...the proliferation of musicology that took place after WW II (you remember; The Big One---it was in all the papers!), coupled with the accompanying fetish about unvarying reproduction of the composer's intentions, left us with a limited range of interpretation.

For me, such is anathema. I figured that a composer left me a cantus firmus which I could interpret in the way I felt that day! A professor brought me up short for this--as I remember, he became livid! It drove me into jazz; I could play what I felt. I got into klezmer because itwas fun and brought me back to roots...sorry, I meant klezmer-derived music---my biggest influence was Mickey Katz! I didn't hear Tarras or Brandwein until I was an adult---I heard more of the recorded work of Don Byron! And I didn't find out until recently that Mickey Katz was influenced by Artie Shaw.

Now I must cease this word-processing, and find a reed that might play. We are now into the end of August, and all the reeds are terrible! Reginald Kell told me "learn to play on bad reeds." I remember his words when this time of year rolls around.

I enjoyed Fred's posting of klezmer backgrounding information. I agree. At a recent Jewish wedding, I had to play the bride down the aisle using an Israeli disco tune, while the groom wanted some music that sounded like bad John Denver! (I transcribed the melody from a legal downloading site---was the CD called John Denver Speaks Hebrew?)

I liked Robin's video clip. Good job! Let a hundred flowers bloom....cheers, Ted Casher

A little background on Klezmer would be useful:
1. When not used as the Hebrew word for 'musician', Klezmer
(capitalized) means: The wedding/celebration music of the Eastern
European Jews and those musicians who played such music.
2. It was mostly dance music, designed to be played loud for dancing.
There was a component of "tish music" - music to be played while folx
were eating. It was NEVER, NEVER vocal. There were no Klezmer songs.
3. Any performances using those old tunes or the style of ornament/
sounds used in Klezmer are by definition, not Klezmer unless
performed at a 'simcha' for dancing/partying.
4. Those days are essentially gone. Klezmer is rarely heard at
weddings anymore, as marrying-age Jews now associate with Israel, not
Kishinev, Odessa, etc. Klezmer is essentially dead. When I play
Jewish weddings, we play mostly Israeli/Hassidic tunes and lots of
rock and swing jazz. Oh, and the occasional Klezmer 'Freylakhs'.
5. The sound and style of playing, however, is very much alive.
People like it. They like hearing it in concerts. So what do you call
it?????? Well, people are still calling this music Klezmer, even tho
it has no ties to weddings. It now has become a name for a whole
genre of styles/sounds. Thus, Giora Feidman (A wonderful musician,
and perfectly capable of playing weddings, should he be hired and
should he chose to do so) calls what he does Klezmer. By any but a
very narrow historical definition, he's right.
6. To call him a fraud is preposterous. By any measure, he is a
superb performer, musician, and practitioner of the style, even if
his ensembles don't sound like an Eastern European Jewish Wedding
Band. He simply has done what people have done for centuries: adapt a
sound/style for his own uses. By his and most peoples' definition,
what he is doing IS Klezmer. And who is to say no?
7. There are quite a few excellent players in Israel playing in the
style, but not the milieu.
8. Unless you can manage to get people to stop using 'Klezmer' as a
generic name (like 'Jazz'), you're going to have to get used to it. I
am a purist, and am careful to call what I do outside the simcha as
"Klezmer influenced" or "Klezmer derived". However, I know I'm being
unrealistic if I expect the world to be purists with me.
