I have purchase a dozen Albert system clarinets on eBay and have only been
disappointed once. If you stick to a known brand (like Buffet or
Penzel-Muller) you'll probably get something playable (after work by your
tech - these instruments are much less complicated than Boehm system
instruments). Unless you're not interested in playing with others, MAKE
SURE IT'S NOT A HIGH PITCHED INSTRUMENT (I have several of these too!) I
had several of the best that I got overhauled and they play quite well - I'm
sure it's not an accurate rendition of their tones to do so, but I use my
regular mouthpiece - most of the mouthpieces that came with these weren't
playable, though they were made of interesting materials, like hardwood!
Good Luck!

Subject: [kl] question on albert/simple-style clarinets
I am looking for an Albert or simple style Bb clarinet. My wish list would
include playable (though I bet that's not in my price range), or playable
with some repairs/not currently playable, older, wooden model. Really not
looking for fancy brands or high-quality instruments. Obviously, if I could
find one of those that would be great. However, I'm sure that's more than I
really can afford.
What would be the going value for something like this? And aside from ebay,
which is where I've been browsing the vintage clarinet categories, where
else could I look?
Thanks so much for your help!
Mary
