My personal favourite is the BBC Music recording by Orchestra of the Age =
of
Enlightenment (Halstead I think), on which Tony Pay is playing. The =
Albion
is great - I think Angela Malsbury would be playing basset horn - she =
played
1st basset in the Amadeus film recording. I do also like the Berlin. I =
don't
like the Sabine Meyer or the St Luke's, the Harmonie de l'orchestre etc. =
is
OK but not special.

I just received the latest "BBC Music" newspaper. Focus in the "Building =
a
library" section is the Gran Partit(t)a. Since this piece is much loved =
and
much discussed here I thought about sharing this with the list.
Anthony Burton is the critic who wrote this and his selected "music =
choice"
recording is by Linos Ensemble (1993, Capriccio) which is said to be
currently unavailable but it is actually available on emusic. The "best =
of
the rest" is by Albion Ensemble (1988, Helios), Harmonie de l'orchestre =
des
Champs-Elys=E9es (Harmonia Mundi, also unavailable according to BBC but
available on emusic), and Berlin Philarmonic Wind Ensemble (EMI).
Since I know nothing about this Linos Ensemble (and not much about the =
other
ensembles too, except of course the Berliner) I was wondering if you =
know
who is playing the clarinets and bassetts.
What do you make of this selection? I own a recordings by Amadeus
Winds/Hogwood which never striked me as particularly exceptional. I have
other serenades played by the London Baroque Ensemble which I like much
more, but I do not know if they recorded the Gran Partita as well.
