Here is a note to me from Roger Hellyer about the matter of the basset horn
trios. Roger is from the UK, and was editor of the excellent Emerson Edition
of K. 361, published even earlier than the Barenreiter edition.

Dan Leeson

... This finding is not new - the fact that these three played trios in the
Vauxhall Gardens in 1789 and 1791 was mentioned by Pam Weston in 1977 - I do
not know about earlier. The source of the information would probably have
been a newspaper report. Also in 1791 Springer and Dworschak played a
concertante for 2 bassets at a Haydn-Salomon concert in the Hanover Square
Rooms, which is much better recorded.

Who knows what they played? It seems to have a mixure of music for clarinets
and bassets - solos, duets and trios. Tony's query does not specifically
mention basset horn trios, just three clarinettists who also played basset
horn.

Anyway David is recorded as writing 6 trios for bassets himself (Hamburg:
Bohme, 1790).

And I have a record of a newspaper cutting, that at the last night of the
season at Vauxhall, 25 August 1791, the was a Concertante for 3 clarionets,
played by Messrs Dworschak, David and Springer.

With regards
Roger
