The two identified as "David and Stringer," are most probably "Anton David &
Vincent Springer," two itinerant basset horn players who were in Vienna
during the time that Mozart wrote the greatest number of his works for
basset horn, and they were most likely, the two who played basset horn in
the performance of the gran Partitta on Mar. 23, 1784.

They left Vienna around 1786 because they could not get any work.

That is a very significant find on the part of whoever called that in for
you. It is a major piece of clarinet history.

Both men are spoken of on several occasions in Deutsch's Mozart Documentary
History.

I'm sorry that I did not know of this before publishing my book on K. 361
because I would have loved to put this information in place.

Thank you Tony. That's very good stuff. I'm sorry that I do am not able to
identify the third basset hornist.

But what did these three men play? What music. The answer to that question
could help establish authenticity to Mozart's basset horn trios.
