Try contacting the museum at Fort Huachaca, Arizona. They had a band in the
very early days out in the wild west. They have on display several photos of
the old band, both posed and in action on the review grounds. Don't
remember if they had clarinets.

I believe that the reason you can't find much is that the clarinet was
not in common use (outside of orchestras) in the US until the
1870's-1880's when it was first used in Army Bands.

During the period you referenced (1840-1880) Army Bands were made up
of brass, fifes (piccolos) and drums. Clarinets were not added until
the 1880's, with oboe and bassoon being added in the 1890's and
finally saxophones in the early 1900's.
