I believe that the reason you can't find much is that the clarinet was =20
not in common use (outside of orchestras) in the US until the =20
1870's-1880's when it was first used in Army Bands.

During the period you referenced (1840-1880) Army Bands were made up =20
of brass, fifes (piccolos) and drums. Clarinets were not added until =20
the 1880's, with oboe and bassoon being added in the 1890's and =20
finally saxophones in the early 1900's.
