I might tend to side with the Director here. It's a show ... not a practice
session. One of my pet peeves when part of the audience, (not as a
performer) is to walk into a cacophony of noise. Having said that I have no
objection to hearing a quiet warm-up - which is probably the better kind
anyway.

As a performer I find that making sure instruments are 'on temp' with maybe
a few minutes playing before even getting into position, followed by very
soft or even silent long tones once seated works just fine.

What's the environment like in the pit? Stable temperatures? That would be
my bigger concern. (The pit in our local performance hall is terrible in
winter unless all the gaps are taped closed to keep the cold air from
blowing through... we have our own 'friendly' arguments with the stage
manager about that as he doesn't like it when we tape things up...)

Ok, let the criticisms fly ..! <g>
