Hi Rich,
This is a situation I've run into in professional pits in L. A. There is
one contractor that wants no sound in the pit once the house opens, which is
a half hour before show time. So the doublers generally get there about
quarter after, set up their horns, wet the reeds, then take one horn at a
time back stage. It's a pain, but it works.
Now if they're unwilling to provide you with a place AND they're not
paying you, then walk.
