Richard Bush gave a well-reasoned caveat on removing the rings from a clarinet barrel.

Thanks for the advice. The barrel I'm using is an extra barrel, so if it splits I'll be okay. And the ring on this one was loose, sliding right off. An excellent warning nevertheless.
