I know that the original version of Appalachian Spring was for 13
instruments. I know that because I played a concert at the Library of
Congress in which that work was part of the program

The were exhibiting the manuscripts of works that they owned, and the
Appalachian Spring was one of them. I don't remember what the
instrumentation was because I did not play on that part of the program.

But if I were you, I'd start by looking up the original 13 instrument
version of the piece in Groves. As I remember, it was quite lovely.
