I think you're being unnecessarily harsh on the conductor. Nancy stated
that the firsts were playing on Bb clarinets - and had already transposed
the part. She lent her C to the second so that the second part didn't have
to be transposed. With the second having intonation problems, the conductor
made the reasonable decision that he should play on Bb as well.
