Surely intonation is more important than anything connected with Dan's =
purist view?

Pragmatism is an important tool.

I think you're being unnecessarily harsh on the conductor. Nancy stated =
that the firsts were playing on Bb clarinets - and had already =
transposed the part. She lent her C to the second so that the second =
part didn't have to be transposed. With the second having intonation =
problems, the conductor made the reasonable decision that he should play =
on Bb as well.
